Gotta Think

by Richard Haxton

Day of the recital
All the music is bi-tonal
My father's new pieces. I've got to find me a way out
The audience is farmers, farmers, farmers. I'm only ten
What can I do so my dad won't force me to play

Gotta Think

Farmers can be patient
But they’ll hate it. I can’t take it
Big bowl in the kitchen mixing up some food coloring
I dip my head in, head in, head in. No way they’ll make me go
Look in the mirror my whole head is brightest green
Daddy’s there, mama’s there, they are mad. Now it’s
Bathtub, scrub down, get dressed, let’s go
I look like a tree frog
